Penmachno Roman Bridge

A historic woodland walk directly from Benar Cottages

Hidden below the forests of Penmachno, near Betws-y-coed, the Penmachno Roman Bridge is one of North Wales’ most atmospheric historic landmarks – and one of the most rewarding walks you can enjoy directly from Benar Cottages. The bridge is an elegant single-span packhorse bridge across Afon Machno. Interestingly, part of the bridge is situated on land that was once part of Benar Farm, linking it closely to the cottages here at Benar, which are converted farm buildings.

Following a beautiful route through woodland tracks, riverside paths and open fields, the walk leads you to a stone bridge that has carried travellers across the River Machno since the 17th century.

Today, the bridge is not only a scheduled and listed ancient monument, but also an Instagram favourite after appearing in the HBO series House of the Dragon.

About the Penmachno Roman Bridge

Despite its name, the bridge seen today likely dates from the 17th century, though it is believed to stand on or close to the line of a much earlier Roman crossing point. Constructed from local stone and rising steeply from the riverbanks, the bridge’s narrow arch and dramatic setting give it a timeless, almost mythical quality.

It is officially protected as a Grade II listed monument* by Cadw, recognising its national historical importance.

A Walk Through Forest, Fields and History

One of the reasons guests love this walk is the journey itself.

From Benar Cottages, the route:

  • Passes through quiet forest tracks

  • Crosses open pasture fields with wonderful views

  • Follows the River Machno

  • Leads to a peaceful riverside setting far from crowds

In spring and summer the walk is alive with birdsong; in autumn the forest turns gold and copper; and in winter the bridge feels wonderfully dramatic against fast-flowing water and bare trees.

House of the Dragon Filming Location

The Penmachno Roman Bridge rose to international attention after featuring in the HBO fantasy series House of the Dragon, filmed across North Wales.

Its ancient stonework, remote woodland setting and cinematic backdrop made it a perfect location — and the bridge has since become one of the most photographed historic sites in the area.

Guests often tell us they hadn’t realised such a well-known filming location could be reached by such a peaceful countryside walk.

It is a walk that changes with every season — and never disappoints.
